Nutrition Tips for a Healthy Heart

Eating healthier doesn't mean giving up the foods you love to eat. It just means to eat smarter. Instead of having ice cream, cookies, cake or candy, try eating sweet fresh fruit. Some people follow the 80/20 rule after losing the weight needed. Eat very healthy 80% of the time & indulge a little 20%.

Here is how your plate should look: fill 1/2 your plate with fruits & vegetables, 1/4 with high-fiber whole grains like brown rice or whole wheat pasta, & 1/4 with lean protein like beans, poultry(preferably light meat without the skin), fish or other lean meat.
  1. Reduce your salt intake.  The American Heart Association recommends less than 1500 mg a day. Read the nutrition facts on food to see how much sodium is in it. I, personally would strive for less, and add my own sea salt to season.
  2. Eat at least 4 fruits and 2-3 vegetables each & every day. And choose from a variety of color and type.
  3. Enjoy fat-free or low-fat dairy.
*If you are craving something sweet, eat raisins, baked apple with stevia, or fresh or frozen fruit.
*If you crave something crunchy, eat apples, carrots, celery, radishes, raw broccoli or cauliflower.
Eating healthy saves you money, too. I save a lot of money shopping at my local fruit & vegetable market.

Don't forget the water. Drink at least 8 glasses every day.
