10 Ways To Help Reduce Your Cancer Risk

1. Increase your fiber
Not only does fiber keep you regular, but studies also suggest that it may decrease your risk for developing prostate and colon cancer. High fiber foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

2. Decrease dietary fat
Particularly saturated fats. These fats are found in foods such as butter, high fat dairy, fatty meats, sausages and gravies. Total dietary fat should make up no more than 30% of your total calories.

3. Exercise
Reducing your cancer risk does not stop at the dinner table. As we age, we tend to lose lean tissue. The loss of lean body mass and an increase in body fat contributes to increased risk for cancer, heart disease and diabetes, so it's important to make exercise a part of your weekly routine.

4. Eat more Tomatoes
Tomatoes are high in lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. Men with high lycopene intakes have decreased risk for prostate cancer. Other high lycopene foods include watermelon and papaya.

5. Meatless Meals
Try a meatless meal once a week. Choosing meatless meals is a good way to make sure plants are a big part of your diet and a great way to save money on groceries.

6. Eat More Fish
Increasing the amount of cold-water fish in your diet can decrease your risk for a number of diseases. The omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, such as salmon, can help decrease inflammation in the body. Another good source of omega-3 fats is flax seed meal.

7. Serve more selenium
Studies indicate that people who have lower levels of selenium in their diets have increased risk of cancer. Two Brazil nuts will give you all the selenium you need.

8. Have pumpkin seeds
Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc. Like selenium, zinc in a mineral that we use as an antioxidant. Zinc is required for normal prostate function and also helps protect your vision.

9. Don't Overeat!
Overeating puts stress on the body. When we take in more calories that we expend, this causes weight gain. Excess body weight increases risk for prostate and colon cancers as well as heart disease and diabetes.

10. Learn to relax
The physiological effects of stress can be detrimental. Stress contributes to the development of many chronic diseases. So, find what works for you, but take the time to relax, kick back and enjoy life!
