You Can Help Protect Your Eyesight with Daily Vigorous Exercise

Borrowed from RealAge Tip
By Mehmet C. Oz, MD, and Michael F. Roizen, MD
It's actually sound medical advice. Vigorous activity can protect you from the 2 leading sight stealers that occur over time: cataracts & macular degeneration.

If you run a little over a mile a day, you reduce your chances of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by 36%. For 5 miles a day, you cut your AMD risk by 54%. Push to 5½ miles, and you cut your risk of cataracts even more. Just don't start exercising this vigorously overnight; begin slowly, and build up.

Not a runner? Any workout that pumps up your cardio fitness protects your sight, such as rowing, biking, swimming, & lifting weights. What you eat, also, has a big impact. Load up on key sight-saving nutrients:
  • vitamin C in tomatoes & citrus
  • zeaxanthin in spinach & bell peppers
  • alpha-tocopherol, a kind of vitamin E, in almonds & sunflower seeds
Take 900 mg of DHA omega-3 as a supplement made from either algae or fish oil every day, or get it in three 4-ounce servings of salmon or trout a week. The combo of DHA, vitamin C and zeaxanthin will, also, keep your joints young when you exercise.
