In a recent study at Oxford University, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving laughter & pain in undergraduate students.
First the researchers measured each individual's pain threshold by seeing how long he/she could withstand a tightening cuff & a frozen sleeve on the arm. Then they were measured again while watching a comedy & again while watching a documentary. During these experiments, participant's pain thresholds rose when they laughed more. The reason is laughing creates forceful exhalation of breath from the lungs triggering endorphin uptake. This biochemical release induces a feeling of euphoric calm, also referred to a "runner's high", helping to manage pain. In addition, these participants' pain threshold went even higher when viewing the comedy together. Laughing together seems to raise one's pain tolerance even more!
