  • Meet your daily requirement for magnesium. Research suggests that men who get adequate magnesium from their diets have a lower risk of heart disease compared with men who don't get enough. Aim to get 400–500 milligrams of magnesium each day.

Monthly skin self-exams and an annual total body screening by your doctor are important for the early detection of skin cancer.
  • Eat carotenoid-rich foods. Save your skin from sun damage & wrinkles by eating carotenoid-rich foods, such as cantaloupe, apricots, carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, and other fruit & vegetables that have deep green, yellow, orange, and red hues.

Natural Flu-Fighting Foods

Americans get a billion colds a year, by some estimates, and there are more than 200 viruses that can cause them. 1. Black-Eyed Peas
These nutritious legumes are rich in zinc, a trace mineral that helps to keep your immune system in working order. Other good choices include: pinto beans, peanuts, roasted pumpkin seeds & wheat germ.
2. Carrots

How to Tame Your Sugar Cravings

If your weakness is for anything sweet, chances are you will find yourself eating more sugar than you should. Intense cravings for sweets can be hard to overcome, but even die-hard sugar addicts can find satisfying & healthy alternatives. Here are some strategies for taming your sugar monster:

1. Eliminate temptations.

If you have cookies & ice cream in the house, you may have such a strong desire to eat them that your willpower evaporates. "If it's in the house, there's a strong chance you'll eat it," says Alejandra Cordovez, RD, of the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami, Florida. If you want an occasional treat, buy just enough for one serving.

2. Don't eat wrong foods at mealtime.

This might set you up for hard-to-ignore cravings later on. If you have a salad for lunch, later your carb-craving body sends out signals that it wants sugar, so you might want to eat a candy bar.  Instead, try adding some high-fiber carbohydrates to your meal, so you won't have such intense cravings later. Toss some canned, drained beans into your pasta and sprinkle some toasted nuts onto your salad.
If this doesn't work, keep on hand some individual portions of dessert that weigh in at 200 calories or less and have 15 to 20 grams of carbohydrates, Cordovez says. If you crave chocolate, keep snack-sized bars on hand and permit yourself to unwrap just one.

3. Eat sweets that contain lowfat dairy products.

Jessica Miller, RD, CDE, CDN, of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City suggests having yogurt or cottage cheese with fresh fruit, crumbled graham crackers, or lowfat granola.

4.Choose fruit for your snack.

Spread a banana with a little natural peanut butter & sprinkle with cinnamon for a sweet treat. Try spreading almond butter on apple slices or on celery sticks.

5.Top yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit and nuts.

Try to keep your serving of nuts to a couple of tablespoons.

6. How about a smoothie.

Mix low-fat yogurt or fat-free milk, ice, and fresh, ripe fruit in the blender for a drink sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

7.  Have some pudding.

Make sure it's fat-free or low-fat, says Sara Crouch, Ph.D., professor of nutrition at the University of Cincinnati. "Pudding has protein from dairy, so you can go longer between meals," Crouch says. "And low-fat dairy products have the potential to lower blood pressure & cholesterol."

8. If you like to bake, use whole wheat flour to make cookies and pies.

Whole grain helps you feel full longer.

9. Bake your own cookies.

Homemade is always best, because you can modify the ingredients to be more healthful.

10. Get moving.

If you're looking for a pick-me-up that you think sugar will provide, consider some exercise instead. Go to the gym or do other exercise. Once your body starts releasing endorphins, your energy level will go up, and your need for sugar may be a thing of the past.

Could better allergy control come from a vitamin bottle? Maybe. A new study suggests vitamin B9, also known as folate, may help improve your immune system's ability to stand up to common allergens.

The Folate Factor

A national health survey of over 8,000 people revealed that higher blood levels of folate were often coupled with less severe reactions to common allergens. Specifically, the folate-lovers' blood contained fewer of the immune-system antibodies that are released during allergic reactions, and the group was, also ,less likely to report asthma or wheezing.

Exciting, But Early . . .
The research sounds pretty promising, especially considering that other studies have revealed an association between higher levels of folate & less risk of inflammation-related diseases, like heart disease & rheumatoid arthritis. But more studies are needed to confirm the allergy research. Regardless, getting adequate amounts of folate is a worthy health goal. Just don't go overboard.  Aim for about 700 micrograms per day -- 300 from food and 400 from supplements.

In the US, folic acid is added to fortify all enriched grain products: flour, breads, cereals, pasta, rice and corn meal. Iron-rich foods include red meats (especially liver) and fish. Dried fruits and beans also have iron.

What Are Trans Fats, and Why Are They So Bad?

Although consumption of artificial trans fats is already on the decline, FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg said further reductions could save 7,000 lives each year.

What are trans fats?

Answer: These fats, also, known as trans fatty acids, are made by adding hydrogen to liquid oil, which turns it into a solid, like margarine or Crisco. This makes it a handy ingredient for processed food manufacturers, since it improves the texture, stability & shelf life. It's, also, inexpensive. Today, it's often used in foods including microwave popcorn, coffee creamers, packaged cookies, cans of frosting, frozen pizza, and more.

Where does it come from?

Answer: Trans fats are a natural component of animal products, such as milk & meat. The FDA says that it is synthesized in the guts of grazing animals.

Artificial trans fats were invented in 1901 by Wilhelm Normann. The German chemist added hydrogen gas to liquid oils & came up with a cheaper alternative to natural products like lard & butter. For many years, these partially hydrogenated oils were believed to be safer than trans fats from animals, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, or CSPI. But by the early 1990s, epidemiologists were realizing that the fats contributed to heart disease.

Why are trans fats bad for your health?

Answer: It increases blood levels of the "bad", LDL cholesterol. High levels of LDL increase one's risk of coronary heart disease, including angina, heart attacks & other potentially fatal problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To make matters worse, researchers, also, believe that trans fats reduce blood levels of HDL, or "good" cholesterol. HDL appears to reduce heart risks by funneling blood cholesterol to the liver, where it's broken down & removed from the body. There's also evidence that HDL slows the buildup of dangerous plaques in the arteries, the American Heart Association says.

Why is it Important to Eat Before Exercising?

Exercising is very important, & not just so that you can lose weight. Exercising is, also, important for good health! Exercising helps prevent diseases, strengthens and tones your body, enhances your flexibility, improves your stamina, and keeps you in a routine for improving the quality of your life!

However, exercising can be very fatiguing & energy consuming. After a good work out, you may just become so exhausted, and incapable of doing anything else. Exercise is something that is meant to leave you energized! Therefore, eating food before exercise is important as this is what fuels the body, and provides it with the energy it needs in order to exercise. It is worth noting that it is important to consume the right kind of food. Those that provide energy, as well as, the proper nutrients for the body. Also, it is important to consume this food 2 or 3 hours before exercising. This is because it takes time for food to be digested; therefore there will be less risk of you experiencing headaches, nausea, dizziness, and exhaustion.

Here is a list of foods that should be consumed before exercise to ensure a productive work out:

Oatmeal

Not only is this breakfast treat low fat, but it is, also, good work out fuel! Oatmeal settles well in the stomach, and provides adequate energy! Adding fruits for energy will make this an ideal work out food!

Bananas

These are an ideal pre exercise food! Bananas are filled with sugar & starch, which make them the perfect energy boosting food! Try adding this wonder fruit to your oatmeal or even eat it whole! Having just one banana is said to be more than enough to last your entire work out session!

Legumes

Various kinds of legumes are high in protein, carbs, as well as, energy! However legumes are, also, known for their ability to cause gas; therefore, it is important to consume in moderation otherwise you will experience gas pain in the middle of your work out! Beans & lentils are excellent for your pre-exercise food!

Peanut Butter

This is an excellent quick work out food! However, make sure you are having it with whole grain bread.
